Many Students Protesting 3-Year Unpaid Bursaries Reportedly Land In Hospital After Suffering Police Assault In Delta

According to a report by SaharaReporetrs, some protesting college students have been on Wednesday injured by the Nigeria Police in Warri, Delta State.

Delta State college students learning in tertiary establishments throughout Nigeria, on Wednesday protested to indicate their displeasure with the Managing Director of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Askia Ogieh, for allegedly refusing to pay them their three years bursaries.

Ogieh had in April 2022 resigned his place as Managing Director of DESOPADEC to contest the simply concluded Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the Isoko Federal House of Representatives however he was defeated.

Surprisingly, he was reappointed on Tuesday by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

SaharaReporters gathered that the aggrieved college students who stormed the headquarters of the fee in Warri, instantly barricaded the doorway gate of the fee, demanding their unpaid bursaries.

However, it was learnt that a number of the college students have been hit with weapons and tasered by the police. Many of them reportedly sustained various levels of damage in the course of the protest.

It was learnt that the injured protesters have been rapidly rushed to the hospital.

However, SaharaReporters couldn’t affirm if the situation of the scholars within the hospital had deteriorated or not.

President of the National Association of Delta Ijaw Students, Comrade Ayigote Festus, who confirmed the incident, advised GbaramatuVoice that they notified the police commissioner, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Area Commander in Warri earlier than embarking on the protest.

Festus mentioned regardless that they promised the police that the protest could be peaceable and never violate any legal guidelines, it didn’t cease the police from utilizing weapons to hit college students.

He mentioned many injured college students have been within the hospital.

He mentioned, “Before we launched into the protest, we knowledgeable the Commissioner of Police, DSS, Area Commander, Warri, that we have been finishing up a peaceable protest. We advised them that we weren’t going to destroy any property or violate any legislation.

“We have been having conversations with the board on the best way out and earlier than we knew it, police had gotten orders to shoot at us. They used teargas on us and used electrical devices to shock college students.

The spokesman for the state police command, DSP Bright Edafe, advised SaharaReporters that no person was shot, stressing that the scholars have been allowed to protest for greater than 4 hours.

He admitted that the police dispersed the protesters with tear fuel, saying they turned violent and began attacking the workers members of DESOPADEC.
