Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea’s new look defence can come together in time for new season

Because of the takeover, Chelsea’s summer got off to a very slow start, and it’s only now finally getting into gear with the first signings being completed.

Nobody has yet arrived to reinforce a defence which has lost two of its starting players however, and that’s a real concern.

In his interesting interview with Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph this morning, Thomas Tuchel didn’t sound worried by the idea that his club might still be bringing in new faces at the back with just days to spare before the season starts.

As he pointed out, he had to manage a game as our new boss just 24 hours after signing, and that involved changing the team’s shape too. In this case, it will just be a case of new faces slotting in to an established system:

“It’s possible [to integrate new defenders quickly. We can, we have to,” Tuchel said.

“I think we can put a structure in place and we have a structure on which we can rely on. For example, if we play against Everton, Thiago can play, Trevoh Chalobah can hopefully play, and Azpi is at the moment here.

“If there are guys still to be signed or not fully aware of the principles, I don’t want to use it as an excuse. When I came in, I had one day to start with the back-three because it was a fit and I still think it will be a fit. The first 10 days or 11 days, with the group have been outstanding. The mentality, worth ethic and quality in training is absolutely impressive and this makes me very happy.”

We have full faith in all of Tuchel’s ability as a coach, and this should be in his wheelhouse. In fact, if the Kalidou Koulibaly deal is completed in the next couple of days, he will have plenty of time to work with his new defensive centrepiece.
