Thomas Tuchel speaks about Raheem Sterling as Romelu Lukaku’s replacement

Thomas Tuchel was asked about Romelu Lukaku’s potential return to Chelsea next season, but the Blues manager quickly changed the subjec.t

He admitted it was not likely that Lukaku comes back, but immediately pointed out that Raheem Sterling had now signed, giving his team a lot of flexibility up front.

It’s interesting to hear Sterling mentioned immediately as a Lukaku replacement, and that changes our whole perspective on what the club’s plans might be for this window, with strikers not being linked regularly anymore.

You can see the manager speaking in the clip embedded here:

Clearly now the idea is to alternate Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling as the most attacking player in the formation and forego a proper number 9.

It’s a decent idea – but in that case why did we spend £100m on a number 9 a year ago? Lukaku never looked like he was going to fit into Tuchel’s system.
