West Ham end contract talks with Declan Rice – but club have all the power

Declan Rice made a huge mistake when he signed his latest contract.

His negotiating power was only growing, but he handed it all back to the club when he agreed a deal that the club can extend to 2025.

Now, despite massive interest from Chelsea and other top Premier League clubs, the midfielder knows he’s unable to force a move.

Sky Sports are today reporting that West Ham have broken off contract talks with the midfielder after he rejected a monster extension that would make him the highest paid player in their history.

So it seems he’s learned his lesson, albeit a little too late.

Chelsea can still get their man eventually, but if they want him this year or next year it’s going to cost them potentially £100m or more, and we can’t see them spending that.

Player power is increasingly a dominant force in football – but if you sign away your potential earnings for an immediate raise, you can have few complaints.
